Yamaha XS650 Cafe Racer


OTOMOTIF.ORG - This is my first artikel about Yamaha XS650 and this is the first time I'm fallin love with the XS Series. I love the tank, it's so close to what I'm trying to achieve with a cafe racer. Absolutely it's very perfect motorcycle design & concept.

Yamaha RX King 135cc Cafe Racer

OTOMOTIF.ORG - Well, for a start let me introduce myself. My name is Teguh Setiawan, I'm 24 y/o, I am an engineer college at one of the universities in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. In recent years, two-wheeled vehicles has evolved into a custom culture as often seen in the streets.

The occurrence began around 2012 when I several times saw the custom bikes on the streets, and attending a big event such as "Kustom Fest" that makes me started falling in love with a custom motorcycle especially Cafe Racer.

At the beginning of 2013 I bought my first Cafe Racer custom bike based on the Honda GL100 but I am not satisfied with the performance and the shape of the bike, then in March 2015, I bought a stock bike known as 2004 Yamaha RX K 135, commonly called the Yamaha RX King in my country (Indonesia).

This bike famous for its strong reputation and reliable machine, but because of government regulations on air emissions then this Oil-Burner-are already discontinue now. So lets call this project with “Long Live The King”.

The trick is to keep the quality high, even when the budget is not. And that's what I do on my second bike. I built this bike by myself from the beginning of the process and you should know that I do not have a custom garage or workshop and only armed with makeshift tools at my boarding house garage with the help of a few close friends for welding and painting processes.

This project takes a long time because of financial constraints, tools, and skills. But slowly it stakeholder concept become to reality for a “New Kids on the Block” like me. At least it took about 10 months to complete the project, although there are still some minor deficiencies in various angles.

I was only armed with a little knowledge from various sources such as magazines, videos on YouTube and watch the process of building custom bikes on my friends workshop. The process begins with finding the reference model of the Cafe Racer in several sources and I got the idea to build such a classic Yamaha TZ or Honda RC with full fairing. Then I started to make an initial concept and think of what needs to be done on this bike.

According to the design that I created on a drawing-card and cardboard,The first thing I did after unpacking the body is removing the engine and wiring then cutting off the rear sub-frame, leaving only the main frame. Then re-create the rear sub-frame with a 3/4 inch pipe of 2 mm thickness for get the perfect angle for riding position where before I’ve had made a square-shaped swing arm.

The difficult thing is to make a new gas tank because I did not have the expertise for it, then I look for a suitable tank in custom shop but still have not found a suitable one. Finally I chose to use an aftermarket tank, from classic Suzuki A100. I chose it because it has sleek shape and length enough. For the Engine, still with factory stock specification with only rebuilding and powder coated finishing my friend workshop.

A sheet of 0.8 mm galvanized plate is cut and shaped according to the fairing and hornet pattern that I made in cardboard. This is another challenge for me because of the shape that must be made to have perfect curve just by using makeshift tools like hammer and without English wheel. But finally done for that work with satisfying enough results.

The shopping list started with all the items that I need. A Rental tachometer fitted in front of custom upper triple T. The riding position was revised by fitting Ride It clip-on bars with simple control panels and a set of custom mounted rear-set foot pegs from Yoshimura.

I use original front and rear hub with polished Champ Rim fitted with Swallow S212 tire for both. Front brake and telescopic front fork are factory stock when rear brake switch to Nissin aftermarket disc brake and use Showa mono shock (later changed to confessional double shock for classic view reason).

All electricity put on below the gas tank when custom battery box hidden below custom seat with custom chrome battery cover. The special thing are this bike still leave rear seat with removable hornet for pillion passenger in emergency use. For remove the hornet easily by open the two bolt on it. For your information, that my bike is not only parked at my garage but also for daily use.

When it came time to paint the bike, the frame, swing arm, front fender and front fork painted with solid black and the body of solid blue with a mix of black on the fairing. When finished painting the body seems to be good if added Yamaha classic striping. After applying the finishing touches, lucky number 92 on both sides of the fairing according to the year of my birth, the whole lot given layer of a clear end.

I first admired this before I was able to experience the performance of running, which was to pursue class No.1 at the start acceleration, overtaking acceleration, and maximum speed.

Design and color do not mention so much because there are individual preferences, but it is different from the others that the red fade color was included in matte black, named Matte Gun Powder Black Metallic like Evangelion Sword Silver, and Victory Red which the super sportiness where vehicle price is about IDR 70 Million strengthened strengthening, classless feeling due to individualized and elaborate shaping and detail.

It stands out more than rivals. There were still a lot of 2 strokes, some people who know the '80s have people saying "It was good in the past" and sometimes hear that opinion for a while, but to me, Modern people who can ride such a cool 250 are better.

Striped items with exterior etc removed are also placed, and I am surprised at the compactness of the newly developed water cooled DOHC 4 valve inline 2-cylinder engine loaded on a steel pipe truss frame.

A truss frame was already drawn on the initial idea sketch drawn by LPL person who was released at the time of technical explanation before test drive. In that explanation, I also heard that the 2-cylinder CBR was born as a trigger from the demand for "overwhelming product" from Indonesia, which has a larger market than other country.

It is sold in Indonesia before, but unlike the Indonesian specification wearing a bias tire, the Japanese specification wear a radial tire (DUNLOP GPR - 300), accordingly the front fork raises the spring rate and damping power Increased, rear suspension has also undergone setting change. The engine is also seasoned a bit differently, while the maximum output is almost the same.

It looks like a spartan style that bounced ass totally, but better than the one I imagined straddling. The feet reach from the sensationally higher than the seat height of 790 mm. A slim body with big constriction where people ride and a sheet shape with thinned front are effective.

During riding, the height is 170 cm rider and the position of the hand is comfortably below the position of Heso. It is a tank shape which knee grip is easy to do and the fit feeling with the body is good. It was a surprisingly gentle ride posture when trying on a looks like an outlook.

Front leg around which adopted inverted formula made by SHOWA. High sliding valve with a diameter of 37 mm ensures high rigidity and high tracking ability by reducing unsprung mass. There are many noteworthy points of this CBR250RR, but the most important thing is the introduction of electronically controlled throttle. As a result, we set up three stages of riding modes: "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport +". These three are not subtle differences but clearly different.

When set to "Comfort", even if the throttle is quickly opened wide, the reaction of the engine is gentle and it takes time to wait until the high engine speed range is reached. "Sport +" is the most sporty response linearly to the right hand.

"Sport" is somewhere in between. As I started to test drive and brought it to the winding suddenly, I always thought that 'Sport +' mode is still fun and I thought 'Are you in need of other modes?', But when I run like a breath With "Sport +", the motion of the motorcycle body was too agile by throttle operation.

If you turn off the throttle, you can change the mode while driving, so if you change to "Comfort" with the left index finger, you can smoothly and smoothly cruising without threatening throttle operation. When entering the town where stop and goes as it is, Motomota by departure and acceleration.

So right is "Sport". At first I was skeptical, but this is. Since its characteristics change greatly, it will not make you feel at ease of use. Thanks to being an electronically controlled throttle, not only the riding mode but also the angle of the power coming out can be perceived properly, it is powerful and fast, but there is ease of riding, which also leads to safety. I think that adoption is correct.

The feeling made up of the motorcycle body, suspension, tire, brake is wonderful, even if you apply strong brakes strongly, you can control it as you want without hitting it. The entrance to the corner is a light body work and the degrees of freedom and stability after leaning are high. I felt that the front fork is top class in this class in particular.

Together with the rear suspension nose dive is small, damping works and follows the road surface. It is being told that the tire is always in contact with the ground, and whirling after sinking is pleasant anyway.

It is light but I also like not being too light. There is no tricky movement at all. This will allow a wide range of skill riders to enjoy sporty cornering. Because I have a high level of running, I feel luxurious, I thought I would like it if I strengthened the rear shock damping (especially elongation) a bit more.

In sports performance including speed, this CBR250RR has left one head. It was the manufacturer's claim and the driving performance as the previous reputation. It is directly linked to the pleasures of running, but the attraction of motorcycles is not only that it's interesting.

There are now various models from various companies. Besides being side by side, price differences and personality have become clear. Which, above or below, is not a good bad but a parallel world that has a different charm. While experiencing Honda's rewinding, I realized the interesting thing that this category has matured.

Harley Davidson Nightster Custom


OTOMOTIF.ORG - Renegade Customs is my little Custom-Company based in Uster, in the State of Zurich in Switzerland. Next to my regular job, I make rough and raw "every-day-bikes" with the concept of "reducing to the max". I build no showbikes, just renegades!


This time I took a 1200cc HD Sportster and made a WW2-Style Cafe-Racer. Big engine with the feeling of a warplane, makes the driver a smile all the time. A little pull and the brap goes on. The unnecessary parts are of course removed, no passenger and no plastic, just engine, leather and steel!


Thanks to the Ohlins-Rear-Shocks you can sit higher and can take the curves till touchdown. K&N-Filter and the 2-1 Zard-Exhaust (Italy) increase the power and the sound. One thing is for sure, this makes this bike look more cool than design produced by the manufacturer.


The Fehling Dragbar, the Rizoma (Italy) Grips, and the new leather-seat makes you feel like on your fav chair. The small motogadget speedometer is still in a good view and shows all you need. And with the withwall-tires you are the eyecatcher on the streets!

Kawasaki Ninja H2R Supercharged


OTOMOTIF.ORG - In this article, I will discuss the 2017 NINJA H2R (Motorcycle by Kawasaki). Kawasaki Heavy Industries Gas Turbine & Machinery Company, Aerospace Company, and the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group's "Technology Development Headquarters" totally developed the "ultimate road sports" Ninja H2 series.


At the Kawasaki booth of the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, a simple model of a supercharged engine is exhibited. It was recognized as one of the exhibits to show the concept, it did not become such a hot topic. In fact, it was installed in a machine that can run and steadily being developed.


And on November 4, 2014, Kawasaki officially announced a commercially available machine with a supercharged engine as the "Ninja H2" series. By the way, there is a public road specification machine, it is "Ninja H2", another circuit specification is "Ninja H2R" lineup. 


The in-line four-cylinder, 998 cc engine mounted is a dedicated engine developed on the premise that a supercharger is to be installed, and the characteristics are different in various parts from the general normal aspiration engine in general.


The supercharger laid out on the back of the cylinder adopts a centrifugal type which is advantageous for high rotation. Adopting planetary gears to drive the impeller minimizes output loss and makes the mechanism compact, it is accelerated to 1.15 times with ordinary step-up gear, and then it is multiplied by 8 times with the planet gear.


It is said that when the engine reaches 14,000 rpm, it is actually increased to 130,000 rpm. The impeller has a diameter of 69 mm, 12 blades, a pumping capacity of 200 liters per second, an intake speed of 100 m per second, and the pressure at that time is 2.4 times the atmospheric pressure.


In July 2015, although only the "H2R" of the circuit specification was announced, the first domestic release of the H2 series was announced. It became the release with the price setting of manufacturer's suggested retail price 5.4 million yen.


The 2016 model was announced in November 2015, but for domestic use only H2R of the circuit specification still remains, the period from November 1, 2015 to February 15, 2016 is regarded as the order acceptance period, after about 2 orders It was scheduled to be delivered in ~ 3 months. It is also done on the price of 300,000 yen at the main body price.


For the launch of this 2017 model as well, for the domestic market only the circuit specifications, set the ordering period from November 15, 2016 to January 15, 2017, delivered in 2 to 3 months after receipt of orders as same as the previous year It is a system of.

Kawasaki KZ200 Custom Chopper


OTOMOTIF.ORG - Initially, I started to like custom motorcycles in 2013, at the time I choose Kawasaki KZ200 or in Indonesia is better known as Binter Merzy. This is a motorcycle manufactured in 1981. It became the first motorcycle that caught my attention, because I think this bike has a pretty unique sound, solid compression, and the price is cheap enough for student like me.


Before deciding to change this bike into its current form, I’ve turned it into a scrambler and traditional “chopper” look. But, in the end. I was inspired by Maxwell Hazan from Hazan Motorworks and El Solitario. They always make a very unique design of a motorcycle with the concept that I can say “out of the box”.


So, I decided to change my KZ200 for the last time with the concept that I call “Bow Down”, inspired by the combination of the Café Racer, Chopper, and Boardtrack which has extreme riding position. Some people going to say this is a Steampunk Machine.


I choose this concept of “steampunk”. Where I combine the natural rust color and detailing made from brass, so their impression of the bike going to make everyone more curious. The whole of the frame has been modified, with the added length of about 15cm of the length of the original frame.


The front suspension is converted into a springer system to make it more “old school”, I really want to make it getting real. I transform this machine into twin ports exhaust inhale/exhale system, because at that time I wanted the big machines but in Indonesia the price of the machine is somewhat less suited to the pockets of student like me.


Therefore, I decided to make this into a twin port and replace the piston using piston car from Honda Life to keep the compression remains solid and more powerful, as well as to provide a balance for the machine that has been made into the twin ports.


In the future, I want to add raw metal impression on this bike by adding detailing using pieces of brass and copper in some parts of this bike, so it doesn’t look too plain. Because this bike is absolutely no intention to be entered into the stage of painting.


Parts of the gas tank, I made it into two parts with a 3D impression. When viewed from the side it looks like a regular gasoline tank, but when viewed from the rear or from the front then it will be seen that the tank actually has two parts.


For the braking system, I chose the drum from the AJS to be used on the front wheels while the rear drum using a drum of Yamaha DT. Because, in my opinion even though the majority of this drum is used for enduro bike but I think it is suitable to support the concept of “tricking” I wanted to show where the left and right drum parts is different in sizes.


To create a comfortable riding position, a seat made similar to cowl seat is align to the frame that has been lengthened. In the future, I will also create a layer of leather seats with no foam at all, because I do not want to see the seat distracted by a pile of foam.


In a test ride, this bike is quite comfortable to drive even though far from comfortable for everyday use. With a little down riding position just like the riding style of a café racer, this bike is more comfortable to be driven on a straight road. Also for maneuver, it is a bit heavy to swing in a low corner.

This bike was built by R I M G Customs which is mine, assisted by Unyil and Ellsa Berland, main team in our garage. Some parts process is done by my friend Pay Garage, they are specialists in metalworking in Kuningan, West Java.
